HOW CAN A PENCIL GRIP CAUSE MESSY HANDWRITING?
This week we’ll be showcasing the ‘8 Signs of a Poor Pencil Grip’ which will provide you with an in-depth list and insider knowledge, identifying the 8 most common signs of a poor pencil grip.
Digging into our experience of working with 1200 schools, we’ll be sharing some of the effects that we’ve noticed, each of these areas has had on children and the impact on their handwriting.
So Let’s kick off with the first, most common sign that your child may be having trouble holding their pencil.
1. HOW CAN A PENCIL GRIP CAUSE MESSY HANDWRITING?
When your child is struggling to grasp their pencil, it can contribute to a lack of control, affecting your child’s ability to hold their pencil.
I’ve seen children concentrating so hard on holding their pencil, that they are unable to fully focus on letter formation.
A poorly formed grasp can also restrict a child's range of movement when using a pencil, resulting in poorly formed letters (messy handwriting!) which can be affected by;
- Inability to control the size of their handwriting.
- Restriction of range of hand movements.
- Difficulties writing on or between lines.
Now, poor or messy handwriting on its own doesn’t necessarily mean your child is being affected negatively by their pencil grip. I’ve seen both adults and children with an amazing tripod grip and letter formation worse that your local GP.
This is only a concern when the impacts of this start to inhibit your child’s ability to learn and enjoy writing, due to fatigue, loss of confidence or the fact that their grip may cause your child discomfort or pain.
If you’d like to learn more about each of these areas, we’ve created a free-to-download guide, to check your child's grip from the comfort of their own home.
